Story Of Addiction, Mania, And Recovery: Inside Margot Kidder's Battle With Mental Health Issues

On May 13, the world lost another great talent. Margot Kidder, famous for her role as Lois Lane in Superman: The Movie, passed away at 69.
Kidder was quite successful as an actress, landing roles in The Amityville Horror, Heartaches, and other movies. But despite her success, the actress had serious mental health issues that even have left her homeless for some time.

Actually, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) back in 1988. But the stubborn actress didn’t want to treat it, refusing to take lithium prescribed to her. As she said:
It’s very hard to convince a manic person that there is anything wrong with them.
Kidder had had burps of madness until it escalated into the public manic episode. In 1996, a computer virus deleted an actress’ memoir.
When she got to know that the files could not be recovered, she became convinced that Thomas McGuane, her first husband, hired assassins to kill her because the memoir was too powerful. Kidder ran away and was missing for a few days:
I was like one of those ladies you see talking to the space aliens on the street corner in New York.
After the incident, she finally embraced her diagnosis. As it turned out, Kidder had mood swings and suicidal intentions when she was a teenager. The star turned to acting because it was the only way to let her real self out without anyone knowing.
What is more, after she got into an auto accident in 1990, the actress had extreme pain that led to alcohol and pills addiction. She even joined a 12-step group to help her get sober.
Fortunately, different treatments for addiction and bipolar disorder started to work. And Margot never experienced another incident like she did in 1996.
