Gary Oldman Pays Tribute To His Mother As She Passes On, Aged 98

Date June 29, 2018 16:50

When Gary Oldman accepted his Oscar for Best Actor on March 4, he was delighted but a little flustered, seeing as competition for the award this year was quite stiff. During his speech, he took time out to thank his mother, Kathleen.

I would like to thank my mother who is older than the Oscar – she is 99 years young next birthday and she is watching the ceremony from the comfort of her sofa. I want to say thank you my mother for your love and support, and get the kettle on. I’m bringing Oscar home.

Oldman won the award for his performance in "Darkest Hour" and besides his mother, he also gave credit to a host of people who contributed to his career. Of course, he did not forget to mention the one man who made it possible for him to win in the first place, Sir Winston Churchill.

Sadly, his mother passed on barely three months after the award. Oldman made the announcement on Instagram where he paid a glowing tribute to his mother. Kathleen Oldman was born in 1919. Her children are Gary Oldman, Jacqueline Wyles, and Maureen Lesley Bass.

For her family and friends she was a source of warmth, inspiration, amusement, support and she will be deeply missed.

We mourn and grieve but loved ones never leave us as long as we keep their memories with us.

According to Oldman, she was “a woman of great talent and mirth” who loved to share with people. Many people liked her thanks to the amusement she offered with her witty attitude to life. In addition, he said she remained a big source of inspiration to members of the family and friends alike.

Kathleen Oldman’s death is a big blow to the family and as much as her son saw it would fit to tell the public, he still asked for privacy while appreciating the outpouring support fans had been showing. For him, his mother’s death is a “celebration of a life fully lived.”

Many Gary Oldman fans were pleasantly surprised to be reminded that EastEnders star Laila Morse is his sister. The 72-year-old was born Maureen Oldman, but she changed her name, thanks to Isabella Rosellini who was dating her brother at the time.

Morse played the role of Big Mo on EastEnders from 2000 to 2016. Although she has had her fair share of trouble, even filing for bankruptcy once, her career is back on the rise as she returns to the show. For the time being, we extend our condolences to the Oldman’s.
