The message reads:

It was with sadness that I learned of the death of President George H W Bush last night.

President Bush was a great friend and ally of the United Kingdom. He was also a patriot, serving his country with honour and distinction in Office and during the Second World War.

Prince Philip and I remember our days in Texas in 1991 with great fondness.

My thoughts and prayers are with President Bush’s family and the American people.

George H.W. Bush and Queen Elizabeth had a really good relationship, probably, because he was the nearest to her in age out of all other US presidents that Queen Elizabeth has known.

As reported by the Daily Mail, George H.W. Bush and Queen Elizabeth got along after a comical incident back in 1991. During the meeting, Bush invited the Queen to the lectern, but forgot to push a pedal so to raise the dais for the Queen. Given the difference in height between George H.W. Bush and Queen Elizabeth, doing so was important.

At that moment, correspondent Jim Miklaszewski said:

She's gone! All I got is a talking hat!

By the way, Queen Elizabeth met every US President since 1945, except for Lyndon B. Johnson.

George Bush was the 41st President of the US from 1989 to 1993, and is considered to be the longest-lived US president. Rest in peace, George Herbert Walker Bush!
