Mary Tyler Moore is an American actress, popular for her roles in the television sitcoms The Mary Tyler Moore Show, in which she performed the role of Mary Richards, and The Dick Van Dyke Show, in which she played Laura Petrie. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2017, at the age of 80.

Throughout her life, Mary Tyler Moore has experienced lots of happy and sad moments. She overcame many difficulties, including two divorces, struggles with alcoholism and diabetes. But the most difficult period of her life was when she lost her child.

Richie was born when Mary Tyler Moore was married to her first husband, Richard Meeker. She was only 18 when she found out about the pregnancy, but she was very happy and couldn’t wait to meet her baby. When Richie was five years old, she got divorced from his dad and married Grant Tinker a couple of months later.

When Richie was completing his senior year, he began using drugs. After the necessary treatment, he graduated from high school and everything seemed to be fine. But in reality, nothing has changed for the better.

In 1980, Mary Tyler Moore’s life changed forever – she got to know about the son’s death. Richie died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As reported by People, Moore spread her son’s ashes into the Owen River:

The water was clear and high as I knelt over it. I opened the container and emptied it into the rushing water. What was meant to be a prayer became an outraged demand. ‘You take care of him,’ I screamed at the sky.

Moore dealt with such a horrible situation with the help of a psychotherapist. She received more than 6,000 letters of condolences and answered each of them herself.

In the interview with the National Ledger, she talked about dealing with her loss:

Time is a great healer. It came from out of nowhere. He was doing so well…Unfortunately, there were terrible rumors that Richie killed himself, but it was an accident. He was a gun collector, he was cleaning guns, and one of them went off and shot him in the head.
