Losing her husband to cancer

Together with Monahan, she'd built a dream life. And then, their perfect life came crashing with a colorectal cancer diagnosis that eventually took his life. 

Second time lucky

But she kept hoping.

I used to worry a lot about the future. [But] who knows what it will bring? Hopefully, it will bring good things.

Can colorectal cancer be prevented?

The TV host may be happy in love and optimistic these days, but nothing really replaces a loved one and what's more, the risks of losing someone to colorectal cancer can be drastically reduced according to Cancer.org.

Here are some easy to control risk factors:

1. Get screened today.

2. If you aren't currently on a diet or don't care about your body weight, that needs to change.

3. Your vitamin, calcium and magnesium intake can reduce colorectal cancer risk greatly.

But it does not have to be this complicated. You can take baby steps today by cutting off excess alcohol and smoking from your lifestyle. Couric, herself, is determined to help more people stay healthy by funding research and spreading the word through multiple cancer foundations in Monahan's honor.
