Their toxic 10-year marriage

Mel B's marriage to Belafonte has gotten a lot of bad press. After their separation in 2017, she claimed that her ex-husband had been physically violent and emotionally abusive. Worse, she said Belafonte saw to it that she was drugged for most of their marriage.

She detailed most of this in her 2014 memoir, Brutally Honest, but her ex-husband disagrees. According to him, Mel B had a drinking and cocaine problem that got in the way of their 10-year marriage.

In 2014, Mel B says she tried to swallow almost 200 over-the-counter pills because she wanted out of life.

I'll be wearing a beautiful dress, my hair and make-up will be perfect. But if you want the absolute truth, I don’t care about any of it. My life is a mess and I want out.

At that point in their marriage, she was filled with so much self-loathing:

Behind the glitter of fame, I felt emotionally battered, estranged from my family. I felt ugly and detested by the very man who once promised to love and protect me, my husband and manager Stephen.

She called for help

But, she did not go through with it. Instead, she called her America's Got Talent co-judge and friend Simon Cowell.

Like Mel, countless women go through emotional and physical abuse in their marriages and are too scared to speak out or get out. But getting help is possible. Here's how:

1. Don't keep quiet or die in silence. Talk about it.

2. If you choose to get out, make sure to have an emergency plan.

3. Seek shelters where you know you'll be safe.

Physical and emotional abuse is a scourge. Tons of people suffering in silence could lose their lives. Well done to Mel B for sharing her story!
