Robert De Niro Breaks Silence On His Marital Troubles, Confirms Split From His Wife

Robert De Niro has finally broken his silence following the sudden split from his wife of 20 years.

His marriage is over

This is the second time the couple's relationship has been rocked by a split. De Niro and Grace Hightower first got together in 1997. Their first child Elliot, 20, was born almost immediately after.

But two years into their marriage the actor filed for divorce.

The divorce was never really finalized and in 2004, they renewed their vows again and had their daughter, Helen, 6.

Breaking his silence

Although the actor did not reveal the exact reasons for their current separation, he said in a statement released via his reps that he and Grace were going through a period of transition.

Grace and I have two beautiful children together. We are entering a period of transition in our relationship which is a difficult but constructive process.

The actor has asked for privacy from fans and made it clear that he still has a soft spot for Grace.

He called her a wonderful mother.

I honor Grace as a wonderful mother and ask for privacy and respect from all as we proceed to develop our roles as partners in parenting.

Online, people are torn by this confirmation of their split. Fans are concerned for the well-being of their little child Helen.

Robert De Niro also has four other children from previous relationships. He shares two children with his first wife Diahnne Abbott — daughter Drena, 47, and son Raphael, 42. He and his ex Toukie Smith also share 23-year-old twin sons, Julian and Aaron.
