A transcript of his 2011 arrest showed that he was very erratic and tried to resist arrest, going as far as running towards his own vehicle when he was asked to get into the police vehicle.
He repeatedly threatened an officer and used a lot of profanity vowing to use his money to get back at the officer and boasting about his public image.
He also made disturbing anti-semitic remarks.
What saved his life
But in a 2016 interview, while directing a new movie, a sober Mel Gibson admitted that what saved his life was submitting to an Alcoholics Anonymous programme.
I've had to do that stuff, otherwise, you don't survive.
He also regrets his emotionally abusive outburst to the mother of his child, Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva.
The incriminating tape was leaked in 2010 and led to him becoming ostracized by Hollywood.
It is disheartening when you have been like 10 years dry on the wagon, sober and you have to read every year or so that you're loaded so that's disappointing because it is like a public notice that you're loaded but you're not.
Empathy is the keyword
But he isn't letting the past affect his future happiness. He says there's no point in feeling sorry for himself. However, dealing with an alcohol addiction can be hard and requires a lot of support.
