Speaking to ExtraTV, weeks after the filming of Dallas Buyers Club wrapped up, McConaughey reassured everyone that his vision loss wasn’t complete and irreversible. In fact, his good vision returned once he went back to his normal diet:

But why did the 49-year-old start losing vision in the first place? McConaughey’s weight loss diet likely lacked vitamin A, which is crucial for maintaining healthy eyesight.

Orange-colored vegetables, such as carrot and pumpkin, are among good sources of this important vitamin.

A word on healthy weight loss

It’s safe to assume that what McConaughey did to himself for his role in Dallas Buyers Club happened under strict medical supervision. But even then, he had to deal with scary, albeit temporary, health consequences.

If you’re planning to lose some weight, learn how to do it in a healthy way. Losing pounds slowly but steadily always beats extreme dieting, which is effective only in the short term and wreaks havoc on your body.

To choose a weight loss program that would be right for you, consult your doctor. He or she may refer you to a registered dietitian to get a more specific plan for losing weight without damaging your health.
