The Queen's 'Golden Piano' Spotted During Her Christmas Speech Sparks Outrage On Social Media

Date December 27, 2018 14:54

It has been a tumultuous year in the UK and elsewhere, and The Queen’s annual Christmas address to the nation was a call for peace, unity, and civility. However, some didn't pay attention so much to the meaning of the monarch’s message, as to the setting it was filmed in. And they weren’t happy.

The Queen’s Christmas speech

The Queen’s Christmas address is a decades-old tradition. In this year’s speech, Her Royal Majesty recalled important events in her family and stressed the importance of the Christian message of “peace on earth and goodwill to all”. It’s “needed as much as ever,” the Queen said.

The speech was filmed in one of the luxurious rooms of Buckingham Palace. And it looks like some people missed the speech itself, instead noticing the expensive furnishings, especially the gilded grand piano.

People are outraged about the piano

Needless to say, a number of anti-monarchist commentators took to Twitter to slam the Queen. Their scathing messages carry one shared implication: they are calling the 92-year-old monarch a hypocrite.

Comments in defense of The Queen

Her Royal Majesty’s supporters didn’t stay silent either. Here are some of their comments:

Some people called out the critics’ ignorance, pointing out the fact that the Queen doesn’t personally own the grand piano (and that it’s not even golden, as they say) or other items in the room:

Maybe, just maybe, we all should be friendlier and treat each other with respect and civility, as the Queen called for, don’t you think so?
