James Gandolfini was a versatile actor, but he’s best remembered for his iconic role on The Sopranos, the hit drama that arguably made HBO the giant it is now.

His character on the show, Tony Soprano, showed the world the many sides a mob boss can have, breaking with the stereotypical 'cool guy' image (like that of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro).

The Italian actor died from a heart attack in 2013, but his son, Michael Gandolfini, is making sure his legacy lives on, both on and off the screen.

Good news for 'The Sopranos' fans

Michael Gandolfini was born in 1999, the year The Sopranos premiered. When he was a young boy, he would sometimes join his dad on the set.

That inspired him to follow in his dad's footsteps, and now he’s making a screen career of his own. He looks a lot like his father (just as Milo Gibson and his dad, Mel Gibson) and shares many of his mannerisms, and that's one of the reasons why he got the role of a young Tony Soprano in the upcoming feature prequel to the show!

The upcoming prequel, titled The Many Saints of Newark, was announced in summer last year, and part of the cast, including Vera Farmiga and Corey Stoll, has been announced earlier this month.

Speaking to Deadline, the young Gandolfini said about being picked for the role of a young Soprano:

It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.

Has Michael watched the show?

To prepare for the role, it would make sense for Michael to re-watch the show. Actually, the young actor hadn’t watched it until he was old enough, as the show contains violent scenes.

In 2014, when asked by TMZ if he watched The Sopranos, 14-year-old Michael said he hadn’t finished it.

He’s probably done watching the show by now, and we are sure he will make a great Tony Soprano, just like his dad!
