Looking back, the actor can be proud of his accomplishments in the film industry, and that’s, at least in part, because his parents set him on a good path when he was young. However, the mom and dad who raised him were not his biological parents.

Ray has opened up about being adopted and how he felt when he met his birth mom.

Ray Liotta on being adopted

When Ray was only six months old, he was adopted by Mary and Alfred Liotta. Growing up, he knew he wasn’t his parents’ biological child. His sister, Linda, is also adopted.

Although he grew up in a loving and caring family, Ray felt the hurt of being given up for adoption for many years. He wanted answers, and he tracked down his biological mother and younger siblings when he was already in his forties.

When Ray finally had the chance to ask his birth mom why she gave him up, he realized she did the best thing she could do in her situation, he recalled in an interview with Larry King:

I realized when I met her that she did it for very valid reasons and then realized that almost 99% of kids that are put up for adoption, it’s for the betterment of the kid… The household, the situation, the age just dictate that’s the best thing to do for the child.

At the same time, the actor admitted he was disappointed when he met the woman who gave birth to him. He said in an interview with The Guardian: “I was really grateful that I was adopted.”

What about his own family?

Ray started a family of his own when he was in his forties. In 1997, when he was 42, he married actress Michelle Grace. The couple welcomed a daughter, Karsen, in 1998.

Although Ray and Michelle divorced in 2004, he remained a present father as his daughter was growing up.

Karsen decided to follow in her parents’ footsteps, and she’s a model and aspiring actress.
