Loretta Lynn's Family Tragedies: How The Singer Lost Her Two Eldest Children And Eldest Grandson

Since she was a young girl, country music star Loretta Lynn knew she would have a big family. She was the second of eight children, so her having many kids of her own seemed predestined.
When she was still a teen, Loretta married Oliver Vanetta Lynn (better known by his nicknames, 'Doo' or 'Doolittle') in 1948. They were married for nearly half a century until Doo’s passing in 1996 and had six children. Loretta now has 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Loretta’s kids continued the tradition of having big families of their own! Sadly, her two eldest children are no longer with us.
Loretta’s tragic losses: what happened to her eldest children?
Loretta’s second child, son Jack, left the world too soon. In July 1984, he tried to cross the Duck River near his family's ranch.
He was riding his horse, and the horse survived the crossing while Jack didn’t. He fell, hit his head, passed out, and drowned, according to the coroner’s report. Jack was only 34.
Loretta’s first child, daughter Betty Sue, passed away in 2013 at the age of 64. She had emphysema and died peacefully near the family’s ranch. Betty had two daughters.
Another sad loss in the Lynn family
Jack Lynn’s eldest son and Loretta Lynn's eldest grandchild, Jeffrey, died prematurely like his dad. In 2016, a statement on Loretta Lynn’s official Facebook page said Jeffrey passed away suddenly, but the cause of his passing wasn’t mentioned.
He had three children: Jory, Katie, and Cody.
Although the losses were hard to come to terms with, Loretta is now focused on her surviving family and spends more time with them now that she’s not as busy with tours and recording sessions as she used to be.
