Casey Affleck On His Brother's Alcoholism And His Own Struggle With Addiction: "It's In Our Genes"

Date December 3, 2018

Talent often runs in the family. Academy Award-winning actor Ben Affleck has an equally talented younger brother, Casey Affleck, who also won an Oscar in 2017. The media often try to portray the relationship between the two brothers as a rivalry, but Casey and Ben have always supported each other through thick and thin.

“It’s in our genes”

As we all know, some negative predispositions also run in the family. Both Ben and Casey have spoken openly about their dad’s addiction to alcohol and how he eventually managed to beat it (sadly, not before his family was ruined).

The Affleck brothers watched their parents’ marriage fall apart because of dad’s drinking problem. Unfortunately, both fell into the same trap when they grew up.

Ben’s struggle with addiction is quite well-documented. The 46-year-old developed the problem back in the ‘90s, but his success in Good Will Hunting helped him stay sober. Alas, that didn’t last long.

Ben fell off the wagon and checked into rehab in 2001. He completed treatment and, a few years later, met his future wife, actress Jennifer Garner. She helped him stay on track to recovery as did his brother, Casey.

Over the past few years, Ben’s demons returned to haunt him. His marriage fell apart because of his drinking problem. The actor resolved to get sober for the sake of his three children and the rest of the family, and his efforts have been more or less successful. Casey has been by his side in this fight.

In a 2016 interview with Marc Maron, Casey opened up about his own struggles with addiction. By that time, he said, he had been sober for three years. The actor admitted alcoholism runs in his family:

My father was a disaster of a drinker, my grandmother was an alcoholic, my brother spent some time in rehab—it's in our genes and I understand it.

Ben completed his latest rehab program in October this year, and Casey is committed to helping him stay sober.

How to help a loved one with a drinking problem

It hurts to watch someone you love ruin their life with alcohol. It’s not easy for that person's loved ones to deal with it, but there are ways to help with recovery. Start with this:

  1. Do your research. Find out about specific treatment and support programs in your area.
  2. Prepare your speech. Make it sound caring and compassionate, not accusatory and patronizing. Be sure to tell that person how much they matter to you and how worried you are about their health.
  3. Choose the right time and place for the conversation. The place should be private, and the person should be sober.
  4. Listen patiently to the person and their concerns; don’t be judgmental.
  5. Enlist the help of the person's other friends and family members. Plan the intervention together with them.

It’s hard to beat an addiction to alcohol without loved ones’ help. Be there for that person, and your actions can help save their life.
