Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s love affair looked like a fairytale at the beginning and a heartbreaking drama at the end. The couple started dating back in 2005 and got engaged just seven weeks after their first meeting.
Their daughter, Suri, was born in April 2006 before they got married in November of the same year. It all appeared to be so soon, so fast, and so romantic. However, five and a half years later, Katie filed for divorce, stating that she feared Cruise would abduct their daughter.
The former head of security at the Church of Scientology HQ, Brendan Tighe, previously claimed that Cruise was never affectionate with his wife, always putting Scientology first. But recently, actress Mary Beth Peil shared an intriguing detail about the beginning of Katie and Tom’s romance.
What did she say?
Mary Beth Peil, an opera singer and actress, talked about the time she was shooting the hit teenage drama series Dawson’s Creek, where Katie Holmes played one of the main roles.
She recalled the first time she mentioned Tom Cruise in the conversation, which made her think that Katie and the already famous actor would end up together one way or another. Mary was discussing Renée Zellweger, saying that she did something to her face:
When that first movie she did came out about the sports guy, she was a normal person and so disarming. Somebody said, ‘Jerry Maguire.’ ‘Yeah, yeah,’ I said. Looking in the mirror, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Katie make the motion for me to ‘zip it.’
So she stopped talking. But the minute the room became less crowded, the people who were left there attacked Mary for talking about Cruise. Then Katie revealed her crush on him.
She knew everything about him. She said, ‘I have had a crush on him since I was 15, and his posters were on the walls of my bedroom.’ She could not stop talking about Tom Cruise. This was way before they got together, but she was certainly ready for him.
But she definitely wasn’t ready for what happened after she married her crush. Tom’s controversial religion caused many problems. According to Katie’s former close friend, actress Leah Remini, talking about Scientology can even cost Holmes losing custody over her daughter.
What could be the moral of this story? Be careful of your desires as they might come true?
