He was the 41st American President and the longest living American leader. He was also a father to the 43rd US President, who addressed the nation to announce his dad’s death on Friday. He wrote:

George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.

Many people paid touching tributes to the man, who advocated a "kinder, gentler" conservatism. One of those people was Her Majesty, the Queen of England.

The Queen’s statement

The British royal family’s official website released a personal statement from the monarch to the people of America. It reads:

It was with sadness that I learned of the death of President George H W Bush last night. President Bush was a great friend and ally of the United Kingdom. He was also a patriot, serving his country with honor and distinction in Office and during the Second World War.

Her Majesty remembered the time she met George H. W. Bush in 1991, when she visited Texas with her husband, Prince Phillip.

Prince Philip and I remember our days in Texas in 1991 with great fondness. My thoughts and prayers are with President Bush’s family and the American people. Elizabeth R.

There is a little ray of light in this sad occasion, the warming thought that Bush will now join his beloved wife, Barbara, and their daughter Robin, who died of leukemia when she was a child.
