It’s all not that clear about the love life of our beloved celebrity actress, Meryl Streep. She’s been through a lot, and John Cazale was one of those who made her the woman she is now.
Who was John Cazale?
In fact, he was one of Hollywood's most talented actors ever. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it for too long and appeared only in five feature films in his career. These are the movies we call classics today and make our kids watch them at least once.
All of the movies he took part in were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter – these are the movies we’ll remember him by.
Woman who stayed by his side
Cazale was the love of her life, but Meryl doesn’t like talking about it. Still, their relationship shaped her as an actress and made her the woman she is now. Back then, she was 29, and he was 14 years senior.
Unfortunately, their relationship wasn’t too long. His cancer was the reason everything ended too quickly. Still, Streep tried to be by his side every minute. According to NY Post:
For five months, the couple disappeared, and for Streep, this was it: No more work, only Cazale. His cancer had spread to the bones, and he was increasingly weak. She went with him to every doctor’s appointment, every radiation treatment and never betrayed a lack of hope.
She stayed by his side till his last breath, and the only thing he told her in the end was:
It’s all right, Meryl, it’s all right.
Streep married sculptor Don Gummer
Six months after Cazale's death, Streep married sculptor Don Gummer. And while people say she betrayed Cazale by marrying just 6 month after his death, here’s what Meryl says about everything:
I didn't get over it. I don't want to get over it. No matter what you do, the pain is always there in some recess of your mind, and it affects everything that happens afterwards. I think you can assimilate the pain and go on without making an obsession of it.
Maybe, it was for the best, as her husband, Gummer, gave her 4 beautiful children she must have found her happiness in.
Meryl, her love, and life are a great example of a strong-willed person who knows backing down isn’t an option. And that’s the thing people should always remember.
