Jessica Lange Always Chose Sad Characters, And That’s Why She Suffered From Depression Herself

Date August 8, 2018

Even the bravest and strongest people back down, especially after some negative events that happen in their lives.

Husband’s death

In 2017, Jessica Lange's ex-husband Sam Shepard, the actor in Black Hawk Down and The Right Stuff, passed away. Together, they had two children and seemed to be a perfect match for each other.

The thing is Sam was battling the complications from ALS on his own, the family didn’t make it public. Nevertheless, they remained the best people for one another. Here’s what Jessica Lange told the AARP about her husband:

I wouldn’t call Sammy easygoing and funny, but everybody has their dark side, and he always does it with a sense of humor.

Their love was despite everything, and this couple knew how to value each other for their differences. And here’s how Sam Shepard spoke about his wife in a frank interview with the Guardian:

Yeah, well, we're definitely an incredible match. But, you know, not without fireworks… although at this point, you know, she's the only woman I could live with. Who could live with me! What other woman would put up with me?

Real bouts of depression

Such a loss must be too hard for her, especially in view of her past depressions back then when she had no family. Here’s how Jessica Lange described it to Los Angeles Times:

I used to have real bouts of depression--I say that not having been in the depths of depression for a couple of years, thinking it's a thing of the past, and maybe it's not.

However, as in the life of every person, there’s always is something that helps you overcome any difficulties. In Jessica’s life, it was her family:

When I was on my own, I could stay in bed for a week at a time and not talk to anybody, but with children you can't allow yourself to wallow in those depths too long.

With the arrival of my family, I felt tethered to life for the first time, and the restlessness that plagued me when I was younger finally disappeared.

And it’s the most precious thing in the world.

Her high-strung characters

As a matter of fact, Jessica has always been playing tough roles. Over 40 years, she’s specialized in playing high-strung characters with dangerous dark sides. That’s what interested her the most. It’s possible she just wanted to connect with their sense of tragedy, but she only played her roles and didn’t allow herself to go there.

Anyways, let’s hope this time, her kids will help her live through another hard period of her life. It’s the only valuable thing she has in the world after her husband passed away.
