Lady Di Hated Her Famous Engagement Ring, But She Kept Her Mouth Shut Because Of One Person's Decision

Date September 11, 2018

Princess Diana and Prince Charles got married in 1981, at St Paul's Cathedral in London. It was one of the biggest events in the country and was called the 'wedding of the year', as around 750 million people all over the world have watched it.

Princess Diana’s engagement ring consisted of a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds and set in 18K white gold. By the way, the ring was neither custom-made, nor unique. At the time of Diana’s engagement to Prince Charles, it was featured in House of Garrard's jewelry collection, and was available to anyone for purchase.

It turned out, Diana actually didn’t really like her well-known engagement ring. But there was a reason why she was afraid to express her opinion.

According to Paul Burrell's Royal Duty, the Queen was the one to choose the engagement ring for Diana. After the Queen, the collection of rings was shown to Prince Charles, and only after that, to Diana. Of course, she supported the Queen’s decision.

Diana managed to express her point of view only years after that. She said she would have chosen a more elegant ring if given such an opportunity at that moment.

Today, the ring belongs to Kate Middleton. She faces a lot of critique because of it, but keeps wearing it.

Nevertheless, it was Diana’s wish. According to The Telegraph, Diana's Letter of Wishes stated:

But I would like you to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your discretion.

The ring looks indeed gorgeous, and Kate Middleton deserves to wear such a beautiful piece of jewelry.
