"There Was No Freedom For Me": Mariah Carey Recalls Her Controlled Marriage With Tommy Mottola

Date July 17, 2019 11:40

Mariah Carey had married Tommy Mottola on June 5, 1993. He was 20 years older than her and was naturally controlling. Due to their growing differences over her music career, the couple parted ways only 4 years later.

Now, she is finally narrating the throttled peril herself.

The singing sensation found love again with her second husband, Nick Cannon. They had tied the knot at a romantic spot in the Bahamas. Mariah gave birth to their fraternal twins: Monroe and Moroccan in 2011. Unfortunately, that relationship didn't last either and the pair divorced in 2016. Now, the songster is solely committed to her beautiful children.

A dominated marriage

Tommy Mottola was the Sony Music boss and was considered the titan of the music industry. He had taken Mariah under his influential wing. Her 1991 debut album had become best selling. The artist gave an exclusive interview to Cosmopolitan and said it wouldn't be false to imagine her as a "child bride" back then.

Carey disclosed Tommy wanted to maintain her reputation as an all-American girl. He suppressed her African origins altogether. She now deems her partnership with him wrong and inappropriate. Mariah recalled:

There was no freedom for me as a human being. It was almost like being a prisoner.

Emotional abuse

Mariah admitted that this marriage was the worst mistake of her life. Tommy made her feel miserable, alone and she used to cry a lot. She revealed to E! Online:

I had to get permission to leave the house. I used to wish, hope, and dream that someone would kidnap me. I never thought I would get out of there.

Even after #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, tons of stories are still left unheard. We appreciate Mariah for coming forward and inspire others. She got off the table when love was no longer being served.
