After a bitter legal battle with her estranged husband Michael Lockwood and a similarly nasty financial fight with her former manager, who allegedly squandered nearly all of her fortune, Lisa Marie’s life seems to be back on track now. But, as she was going through the legal disputes, there was another fight going on in her life…

Lisa Marie finally opens up about addiction

In her foreword to the book The United States of Opioids: A Prescription for Liberating a Nation in Pain by Harry Nelson, Lisa Marie finally addressed the issue many of her fans were seriously worried about: her struggle with addiction.

The 51-year-old admitted her problems with substances started after she gave birth to twin daughters, Vivienne and Finley, in 2008. She was prescribed opioids to deal with the pain. And, like hundreds of thousands of Americans, Lisa Marie couldn’t stop taking the drugs after they were no longer needed.

As time went by, alcohol and drugs compounded Lisa Marie’s worsening addiction. Although she was well-aware of the dangers, as she lost her dad to addiction and her ex-husband Michael Jackson died of a propofol overdose, it got to the point where she lost control and thought she might repeat her loved ones' sad fate.

Fortunately, her four children – the twins and their older siblings, Riley and Benjamin – helped her find the strength to recover. In sharing her story, Lisa Marie hopes it can help others find courage to reach out and get help.

She wrote:

Across America and the world, people are dying in mind-boggling numbers because of opioid and other drug overdoses. Many more people are suffering silently, addicted to opioids and other substances. I am writing this in the hope that I can play a small part in focusing attention on this terrible crisis.

I experienced firsthand how hard it is to cut through all of the bad information out there to get help. We all need to educate ourselves and the people around us on the dangers of opioids and other drugs, and understand what we can do to keep ourselves and the people we love safe.... Acknowledging that we are all at risk is not a measure of weakness, but of honesty.

It takes courage to admit the problem and get the much-needed help, and sharing your own experience isn’t for the faint of heart either. Lisa Marie made the right decision to share her own story, and we hope it gets to those who really need it.
