Fans remember John Wayne for his 'tough guy' onscreen persona, but it’s also worth mentioning that he was a loving father. His youngest son, Ethan, was born in 1962, when the actor was 54.

Ethan followed in his father’s footsteps and became an actor. He also performed stunts in several films, including The Blue Brothers.

Ethan remembers his dad

In recent years, Ethan has kept a low profile. He rarely gives interviews, but he recently, spoke with Fox News and remembered his famous dad with admiration.

John knew he wouldn’t be around for his youngest children long enough (Ethan’s sister and John’s youngest child, Marisa, was born in 1966). So he was a present, hands-on dad. Ethan recalled how his dad took him to film sets when he was a child and how fascinating it was to watch films being made.

And the real-life John wasn’t much different from the onscreen John, Ethan recalled. He still has that vivid mental image of his dad, and that’s probably the way many of us picture him:

[And] he’s on a horse, he’s running at full speed across open country, with a herd of horses running with him… he was a bold, outgoing individual who was full of life, constantly moving forward… And nobody sits on a horse like John Wayne does.

John died at age 72 from stomach cancer. Ethan, who was only 17 at the time, wasn’t ready for his dad’s passing. John’s friend, stuntman Gary McLarty, was there for young Ethan and gave him a sense of direction. Having this man as a father figure is what inspired Ethan to become a stuntman.

John’s other children

With his third wife, Pilar Pallete, the actor had three children: Ethan and his sisters, Aissa (b. 1956) and Marisa (b. 1966).
