Katey Sagal has appeared on a number of TV shows over her decades-long career, but her most memorable performance will always be her breakthrough role in Married…with Children. She played Peggy Bundy on the show for 10 years.
Her performance on Married…with Children didn’t win her a Golden Globe, however. She won the award in 2011 for her role as Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy.
Despite Katey’s success in acting, there were times when life was hard on her. She struggled with addiction to diet pills, alcohol, and cocaine for 15 years.
In her candid memoir titled Grace Notes: My Recollections, the actress revealed what set her on the wrong path. Her own mom and her close friend’s mom, Judy Garland, struggled with addiction, and she had to witness it when she was young. She wrote:
When I was 12, we lived on the same block as Judy Garland. Her daughter Lorna Luft and I became neighborhood buddies. Lorna’s mom had a lot of pills on her bedside table and slept past noon just like my mom. We hung tight. And, of course, I thought everyone’s mom took a lot of pills.
At that innocent age, Katey and her friend didn’t know what the pills actually were and what they did to their moms. But when Katey got older, she fell into the same trap.
Eventually, Katey managed to beat addiction and is sober now.
Acting is not her only talent
Although Katey is best known for her acting, she actually started out as a singer. In her young years, she was a singing waitress and later became a backup singer, working with such music legends as Bob Dylan, Etta James, and Bette Midler.
In an interview with Time, she revealed what led her to put singing on a back burner and go into acting:
In my late-twenties I realized that I had to be open to other things, because I was living paycheck to paycheck. My father was a director and he always thought I had natural talent for acting. So I got an agent and started working. Things went pretty quickly, which was fine by me, because I had put in my struggle in my twenties, you know?
Katey later returned to singing and her latest album, Covered, was released in 2013.
The actress didn’t let addiction ruin her and has a successful career and a happy family, and that deserves admiration.
