“Everybody Fills A Void With Something": Chrissy Metz Bravely Opens Up About Her Experience With Overeating Due To Depression

Date October 11, 2019

Chrissy Metz gave a rare insight into her problems with overeating as a part of 'filling a void' due to depression.

When Chrissy Metz first auditioned for the TV series This Is Us, she was broke, having only 85 cents on her bank account. She was having financial issues, but her passion for acting was stronger than a feeling of despair, loneliness, and sadness.

The Hollywood star felt like the role of Kate Pearson in the NBC drama fitted her perfectly, and she wanted to star in it more than anyone.

Here was this woman who was actually dealing with weight. Not like, 'Oh my God, I gained a pound. She was a real woman who was really struggling, and all I could think was, 'Oh my God, I'm Kate.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Metz opened up about her personal experience with overeating. She said she had used her real-life situation to demonstrate her character's struggles with food.

It's one of those things that, of course, I can relate to because I have those voids with validation from other people or with food or whatever I think is going to make me feel better.

The 39-year-old added:

Everybody, to some degree, fills a void with something, whether it's social media, alcohol, drugs, overspending, overeating. We're either chasing a feeling or trying to get rid of a feeling.

However, all these things never make us feel better. Chrissy concluded:

But in the long run it never does. It's just a Bandaid on a really big wound that you have to get to the bottom of, because we don't like to be uncomfortable as humans.

In a 2017 interview with PEOPLE, the This Is Us actress revealed she's finally happy after dieting and depression. During many years, Metz gained more than 100 lbs due to mental health issues, which resulted in "eating my feelings."

However, a panic attack on her 30th birthday was a much-needed wake-up call as she ended up in a hospital. Since then, the breakout star has worked hard on her self-acceptance and becoming a role model for body positivity.

Life gives us a lot of hardships that we need to pass by and deal with. It is genuinely challenging to work on our own self and achieve what our hearts truly want. But Chrissy Metz is an inspirational figure and an excellent example of how to beat pain and gain confidence and self-love.
