Buddy Holly's wife María Elena was two weeks pregnant when he tragically died in the plane accident in 1959 at age 22, and since that fatal day, she blamed herself for his passing.

Elena Holly found out about the death news from the TV reports. She didn't feel very well that fateful day and hence, didn't join him in his scheduled tour. She felt extremely guilty for his demise as she knew "he would have never gotten into that plane" if she "had gone along."

Her sorrow and guilt were so strong that she tried to get away from the public eye at first, but she then discovered her true mission, which is to keep Buddy's legacy alive forever.

Joe convinced me that I was being greedy by keeping Buddy from his fans. He told me, 'María Elena, you need to tell your story.' That’s how I got back with Buddy, through the help of a man who didn’t even know what rock and roll was.

Later, she would devote her full time to protecting her late husband’s contribution and waging a campaign against exploitative record companies. She has become famous for her no-nonsense approach, all while gaining a lot of enemies and public criticism.

Guarding the legacy of a celebrity while keeping the flame lit is no cakewalk.

Although María Elena and Buddy Holly were married only six months, they were very close to each other. The musician's widow said she still thinks about her late husband every day and truly misses him.

Elena told Mirror:

I feel emotional every time I see a photo of Buddy, every time I hear his songs, I think about him every day. I miss him so much it hurts. It’s the simple things, how he smiled, and how tender and loving he was with everyone, especially me.

Sadly, María Elena didn't give birth to her and Buddy's child when she was pregnant at the time of the plane crash: she reportedly had a miscarriage. Albeit, she is now the mother-of-three, a devoted wife, and a loyal guardian of the musician's legacy!
