Tyler Perry is known for creating the famous character Madea. He is also one of the most successful filmmakers in Hollywood. But before all the fame and success, he had to overcome a brutal childhood.

Born in Louisiana, Tyler has an impressive net worth of $600 million. He is an actor, director, play-write and producer with an empire worth more than $1 billion. The actor owns a 330-acre movie and TV production studio in Atlanta.

The entertainment mogul recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for creating an empire from a series of movies about the God-fearing grandmother Madea.

Journey to success

The actor is opening up about how he overcame his brutal childhood which was marked by abuse and trauma. After some time he had to forgive the man who caused all that pain.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Perry revealed how his determination, faith, and creativity led him to become a successful mogul in the movie industry. He expressed gratitude to his mother who introduced him to church and opened him up to a world of deep religious faith. Perry said:

I don’t think I ever felt safe or protected as a child. [It took] a tremendous amount of prayer. But the biggest thing that helped me understand it is that me holding on to what I was holding on to wasn’t hurting him…but it was killing me.

Perry further explained:

I’m telling you, the shift and forgiveness in me left me raw because it was a weight inside. Once I let it go, I literally felt lighter inside. I chose to be as positive and inspirational and I can, because I don’t want to feel that again.

Tyler on the importance of forgiveness

During an appearance on Dr. Phil’s show, the director talked about how forgiveness changed his life and career. The movie producer noted that when he got to a point where he could forgive his father for his rough upbringing his life became different. He said: “Forgiveness has been part of his major growth in life.”

Tyler Perry endured a lot from his brutal childhood but with forgiveness and determination, he overcame it.
