Alfre Woodard is one of those women who can proudly say they have experienced true love. When the Hill Street Blues actress met her husband, writer Roderick Spencer, it was like a lightning bolt.

Woodard admits it was love at first sight, or a simple lust as she jokingly adds. She was introduced to Roderick by her acting teacher and since then, they have been inseparable.

The marriage that survived time

Alfre and Roderick married 2 years after they met on L.A.’s polo field. Over 250 friends arrived to celebrate the couple’s love and devotion to each other.

Though Woodard might be the one who gained more fame, Spencer is not a mere commoner. He acted a few times alongside his wife and performed stand-ups in many L.A. clubs.

Talking about her husband, Alfre’s brown eyes get filled with tears as she states:

I married him for love. Roderick is my best friend.

Spencer means the world to Woodard and she says that her feelings go way deeper than just love:

I trust my husband more than I’ve trusted any other human being. It feels like love, but at the same time, it’s deeply spiritual, like a homecoming.

The couple is raising 2 adopted children together, daughter Mavis and son Duncan. For Alfre, there’s nothing more important than her family. Even her successful career will never stand before the people she loves.

One of the secrets to the couple’s successful marriage is nurturing the partnership they have and helping it to grow.

Alfre also believes that she has been happy with Spencer for 36 years because he is the right person for her and judging by the pair’s smiling faces, there is no doubt her words are true.
