Renee Zellweger just revealed that she took a hiatus from acting to manage her depression. The Oscar-winning star spoke with New York Magazine in the lead up to her new role as Judy Garland in the upcoming film Judy.

Renee Zellweger about her retreating from Hollywood

She shed some light on her choice to step away from the wild world of acting in 2010 for six years.

The Oscar winner recounted that she had experienced burnout and depression after garnering great success in blockbusters such as Bridget Jones’s Diary and Chicago.

“I wasn’t healthy,”

- Zellweger told New York Magazine.

“I wasn’t taking care of myself. I was the last thing on my list of priorities.”

That, in fact, was the period when she began seeing a therapist for the first time. There, her therapist helped her navigate the emotions she was feeling during her retreat from the business.

The actress also recalled not being able to recognize that she was burned out due to the relentless pace of her career, saying that she kept pretending that “you’re okay to go and do this next thing.” Moreover, she didn't want to let those exciting opportunities that were coming into her life slip.
