Carson passed away in January 2005 of respiratory failure at the age of 79.

Wayne's experience

Since Carson's death, many people have shared their opinions and tributes to him. But 'Mr. Las Vegas' Wayne Newton had a particularly interesting encounter to share.

In 2007, the veteran entertainer blasted the late talk show host while on CNN's Larry King. Newton said he had been on Carson's show many times and even considered the TV personality to be a friend.

However, out of nowhere, Carson began making non-stop jokes about Newton being gay. Newton felt upset by this and initially tried to reach Carson to discuss the matter amicably but it seemed like the TV host was avoiding him.

I called his agents, I called his manager, I called his attorney. I went through probably a year-and-a-half of trying to reach him.

Newton said he eventually gave up and went to see Carson himself to confront him. He walked right to Carson's office unannounced and threatened physical violence if the Tonight host continued making the jokes about him.

Newton said Carson responded by saying he was the singer's "biggest fan" and Newton simply scoffed in response.

Speaking straight to Larry King, the American entertainer then stated:

Johnny Carson was a mean-spirited human being. And there are people that he has hurt that people will never know about. And for some reason at some point, he decided to turn that kind of negative attention toward me. And I refused to have it.

He went as far as physical assault

While speaking with Conan O'Brien, Newton brought up his beef with Carson once again but this time, he said he even hit the late host because he was fed up.

On the show, Newton admitted to "smacking" Carson during their encounter because he was just that upset.

Carson might have been famous but some people could have found him offensive since he was known to be quite opinionated. Newton must have felt he needed to do something about it when he became the butt of what he considered were distasteful words.
