The world will always remember Andy Kaufman for his renowned knack for making people laugh. Unfortunately, his life was cut short at a young age of 35.

In November 1983, Kaufman experienced consistent coughing and was diagnosed with large-cell carcinoma. He underwent palliative radiotherapy, but it wasn’t effective as the cancer had spread from his lungs to his brain.

On May 16, 1984, Andy passed away in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Before he passed away, Andy had a daughter, Maria Bellu-Colonna, with his high school girlfriend, who he gave up for adoption before even meeting her.

After Andy’s death, several theories about his death being a hoax surfaced, and his daughter helped champion it.

Maria claims her father is alive

Although Maria never met her father before his demise, she claimed in 2013 that her famous dad is very much alive.

After Andy’s death, his brother Michael was addressing the crowd at the Andy Kaufman Awards and explained that he found a letter while cleaning out his brother’s closet that talked about his plans to fake his death.

The written essay explained that Andy was going to return on Christmas Eve in 1999 at his favorite restaurant. When the proposed date came, Michael went to the restaurant, and a young woman handed him a note from Andy.

The letter explained that Andy left to go into hiding to spend time with the woman he loved and their daughter and warned Michael not to say anything until their father died.

After their dad, Stanley died, Micheal received a call from a woman claiming to be Andy’s daughter. That was when Maria came on stage to talk about her dad. She said:

“I’m not trying to prove anything. It’s just that he told me this because he was really sad his dad and the fact that I had never got to meet him.”

She also mentioned that he told her how much he appreciated the fact that his family honored him with the award ceremony.

Michael, however, believes it is a hoax

During a sit down with CNN’s ‘The Lead with Jake Tapper,’ Michael confessed that he doesn’t believe Maria’s confession and thinks he is a victim of the hoax.

He also believes that the woman who came upstage isn’t truly Andy’s daughter and that she is working with someone to trick him.

The story surrounding Kaufman’s death is quite mysterious. Only time will truly tell the truth.
