Singer Steve Perry warmed the hearts of many with his melodious voice as the frontman of the band 'The Journey.'

However, spirits were shattered in 1996 when he announced he was leaving the group, and this he did for a whopping 20 years!

As revealed on his website, Perry exited the band and stopped singing because he felt burnt out.

"The truth is that I thought music had run its course in my heart. I'd had an amazing time in an amazing band, and then the chance to express myself as a solo artist too. But I had to be honest with myself, and in my heart, I knew I just wasn't feeling it anymore."

It wasn't until recently that he returned, but what prompted him to do so is heartbreaking.

Steve fell in love with a dying woman

During a sit-down with The Guardian, Perry dished on what happened to him during his 20-year-hiatus and how love changed his life.

He recalled that in 2011 he was looking at a director friend's TV cut for a movie about breast cancer, and that was when his eyes fell on a woman named Kellie Nash whose smile drove him crazy.

He asked for Nash's email from his friend, but she warned him that Nash was in remission, but her cancer came back, and she was fighting for her life.

On hearing that, Perry hesitated to reach out to Nash, but pressed on and urged his pal to send an email to her.

Nash and Perry met for dinner and in a year-and-a-half began dating. He entered the relationship knowing Nash would die, but he loved her too much to let go.

When asked why he did so, Perry answered:

"I believed our love would cure her cancer. I really did."

However, before she died, Nash was able to refuel Perry's passion for music. He recalled:

"She said: 'Promise me you won't go back into isolation because I fear it would make this all for naught.' I said: 'OK, I promise.'"

A year and six months after Nash passed away, Perry returned to live performance.

He has released a solo album

Although it was a devastating loss that fueled him to return, Perry honored Nash's wish and released a solo album titled 'Traces' in 2018.

He explained that the album tells the story of where he has been for the last two decades.

It was a heartbreaking journey back to music for Perry, but it was one that wakened a passion that seemed dead.
