Many people's hearts went out to Barbara Windsor and her family after it was revealed that the actress was struggling with dementia.

A close friend of Barbara, Christopher Biggins, once shared that he knew about her Alzheimers and he understood why her husband Scott Mitchell felt it was time to reveal it to the world.

While he was talking about his friend on Lorraine, Christopher said that when people would come up to them on the streets, Barbara got confused.

So I think he wanted the public to know so that the confusion wouldn’t be there.

In a recent interview with the UK Mirror, Biggins expressed how tough it is to watch his friend cope with dementia as the symptoms become even more pronounced.

Anytime he's around her, he tries not to let his sadness show even when she asks him the same question over and over.

When I’m with Barbara, I don’t have sadness or tears because she would see that and I don’t want her to. So I’m always upbeat with her.

While speaking about the last time they had lunch, Biggins described Barbara as having "tremendous energy" and said they had some good laughs.

But she asked me ‘what are you doing?’ eight or nine times because she’d forgotten my answer.

He said it was sad that she forgot his answer each time but he kept those feelings hidden until after he left her. He believes it's his duty to be cheerful whenever he's with his dear friend.

He went on to say that she always remembers him, however, her husband writes down names of people and a small list of what they've done so when they visit, she remembers them.

Although her short-term memory is not so good and she might forget what she did earlier in the day, her long-time memory is fantastic.

The upside of this was that Barbara and Biggins, who have been friends for decades, have a great time talking about the past.

The condition has been tough on Barbara's husband too who once revealed to the UK Sun that she sometimes forgets they are married.

Of course I do have to keep reminding her, but that's the nature of the condition, unfortunately.

One can't imagine how tough this must be for all involved, especially close friends and loved ones. But it sounds like those who care for her are determined to keep her as happy as possible.
