"All My Children" Alum Cameron Mathison Is Battling A Rare Type Of Cancer Which Was Developing In His Kidney For More Than 10 Years

Date September 12, 2019 11:02

Former All My Children star and Hallmark Channel staple Cameron Mathison announced via social media that he’s been diagnosed with rare type of cancer earlier this week.

Cameron Mathison's kidney cancer

Doctors found a tumor on his right kidney during an MRI procedure he recently underwent for "gut issues" a month ago. The growth was consistent with renal cell carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer that begins in the lining of small tubes in the kidney.

Luckily, Mathison's diet and lifestyle appears to have mitigated the seriousness of the prognosis.

"The good news is that it hasn't spread to any other organs," he revealed in the post's caption, along with an image of his family of four. "They say my healthy lifestyle and diet has no doubt helped keep it from growing and spreading to other areas, as doctors think it's been growing in me for minimum 10 years I am extremely lucky that we found it early."

After the tumor was discovered, doctors also told Mathison they believe the mass was growing inside his kidney for 10 years or possibly longer. Amazingly enough, the tumor hasn't spread.

Mathison said he felt lucky that the cancer was caught early and thanked his doctor, his family and colleagues for being “absolutely amazing” with their love and support throughout what has undoubtedly been a difficult time for Mathison and his loved ones.

Upcoming surgery

He would be undergoing surgery on September 12. The 50-year-old concluded his post -- which was shared alongside a photo of him, his wife, Vanessa, their 13-year-old daughter, Leila and 16-year-old son, Lucas -- by saying that he's "feeling very grateful and optimistic!!"

“I was hoping to receive positive thoughts, prayers, or whatever you feel comfortable with, on 9/12 (my surgery is at 1pm PST) ???????? I announced this on @homeandfamilytv yesterday, and wanted to make sure I posted about it here as well. Feeling very grateful and optimistic!!”

We also pray for Cameron and hope he'll be safe and sound!
