Aretha passed away in August 2018, at the age of 76. It was reported that she died in her Detroit home surrounded by friends and family. Her cause of death was advanced pancreatic cancer.

After her passing, her family initially decided to divide all her assets and income equally among her four sons because they believed she didn't leave any will behind.

However, according to the New York Times, those plans had to be discarded when a series of handwritten wills were discovered and could significantly affect the family's previous plans for her estate.

The documents were reportedly found in a locked cabinet and under the sofa cushions of Aretha's home. They were submitted to a judge in other to determine their authenticity and whether or not they can be considered valid.

The motion to look into these scrawled wills was filed by Aretha's son Kecalf Franklin. The judge ruled in his favor saying an expert will get four hours to analyze the handwritten documents.

If the wills are found valid, it means Kecalf will be granted more power with Aretha's estate than he currently possesses, reports say.

Earlier this year, Kecalf made moves to take complete control of Aretha's estate and accuse Aretha's personal rep Sabrina Owens of failing in her duties. Aretha's son went to the court requesting that he is appointed as successor and is given the power to manage all aspects of Aretha's business.

At this point, the court battle is still going on over who gets what. And it will all be revealed in time.
