It was a devastating time for the singer and her family as they tried to be there for him during his illness and faced the idea of moving on without him after his death.

A powerful promise

In 2015, a year before René passed away, Celine Dion opened up to USA Today about caring for her husband who, at the time, was still struggling with the disease.

Describing him as the "only boyfriend" she had ever had, the singer opened up about some emotional moments they shared together.

She said she was determined to be strong and positive for him. And at one point, they even had a tender, heartbreaking discussion.

I'll say, 'You're scared? I understand. Talk to me about it.' " She pauses. "And René says to me, 'I want to die in your arms.' OK, fine, I'll be there, you'll die in my arms.

Sadly, Celine couldn't keep this promise that she made. She told the UK Mirror in May 2016 that she was performing the night her husband died so she wasn't there with him.

René wanted to die in my arms but, alas, I was singing that night. He died on the night of 13-14 January. He must have wanted to get up and he fell on the floor.

Her regrets

While speaking on ABC's Nightline, Celine revealed that she regretted not being with her husband of 21 years on the night he died.

He did not die in my arms but I think he died in my heart.

The singer said she had to fight to let go of the pain she was suffering for not fulfilling her René's wish adding that if she kept holding on to it, it could prevent her from moving on.

Grieving a loss of a loved one is incredibly difficult and adding guilt to the mix makes things even more so. Let's hope Celine forgives herself and understands that it wasn't her fault that she was not there with her husband.
