Kathie Lee Gifford’s first husband, Paul Johnson, brought distress into her life. When she married him in 1976, she thought he was a “catch,” but on the wedding night, she realized she was totally wrong. Since this moment, the couple never had intimacy and real passion.

[The marriage] was a real disappointment to me, as I know it was for Paul. We all want to love and be loved, and when it doesn’t happen, it’s devastating.

In the book Regis!: The Unauthorized Biography, author Kathleen Tracy wrote that Kathie Lee Gifford's six-year marriage to Paul was nothing but “an illusion.”

Kathie Lee Gifford’s first husband

It’s been donkey years since Gifford divorced from Paul Johnson. Yet, the former Today host decided to reflect on her painful experience in a new interview with Closer Weekly. The 66-year-old boldly admitted her first marriage was terrible, whereas her second one was a bliss.

Marriage, I’ve been blessed. I had a terrible first marriage, and I had an amazing second marriage. I don’t even consider my first one marriage; it was a legal document...

Kathie Lee Gifford had spent 29 years with Frank Gifford until his death in 2015. The two had two children:

  • 29-year-old son Cody;
  • 26-year-old daughter Cassidy.

When she was asked whether or not she would marry for the third time, she replied:

To the right person, if that person comes along. Yes, of course.

Actually, Kathie Lee Gifford considered leaving Frank due to infidelity issues. Talking to Hoda Kotb on one of the shows, she candidly stated:

Having been through it myself, it’s no fun. It’s horrible. It’s a tremendous test of your relationship. It takes a lifetime to build that kind of friendship and history together and trust, and it takes one stupid decision to destroy it. Sometimes you run out of time to build it up again. I was grateful that we could.
