Rob Lowe and his wife, Sheryl Berkoff, met on a blind date in 1983, and he wasn’t ready to start a relationship at the time. His hesitations came due to his suffering from alcohol addiction and constant involvement in public scandals. Thankfully, the Hollywood hunk has been in recovery for two decades, and his wife Sheryl was one of few people who has been standing by her partner since the very beginning.

She inspired me to get sober. She’s put up with my defects of character as they call it. In sobriety, the lessons keep coming if you’re lucky enough to be along as long as I have. She’s stood by through all of that.

Rob and Sheryl got married in 1991, eight years after their blind date. Falling for the right person always helps people become a better version of themselves, and that’s precisely what happened to The Outsiders actor at the time.

In an interview with Haute Living, the 55-year-old stated that his past mistakes had helped him make better adjustments and changes to his current life, including his relationship with Sheryl.

I had met my now wife, Sheryl, and was attempting my first try at monogamy — which was not really in my nature at the time — and I wasn’t able to do it. It made me examine how I was living my life. That led me to getting sober, which led me to changing my life — giving me everything I now have.

Falling for Sheryl made Rob reevaluate his life and devote his better part to his wife of almost three decades. With his willing and her help, the two have produced two amazing sons, Matthew Edward and John Owen.

What’s the secret behind Lowe’s marriage?

It is no wonder every couple has something unique that keeps their relationship stronger than ever. In August 2019, Rob Lowe and Sheryl Berkoff marked their 28th wedding anniversary, and they aren’t afraid to admit their love amid all struggles.

In an interview with AOL., the father-of-two said:

It really is all about who you pick. I always say to people, ‘If there’s any way to marry your best friend, do it.’ ‘Cause the rest of it comes and goes, and I was very lucky there.

The Parks and Recreation alum added that the two had sought help with a professional while going through challenging times:

The one thing, though, that has been a part of our family is the notion of therapy as a sort of proactive, non-shaming [practice], like a trainer. We think of going to therapy or talking to a therapist ... it’s literally no different from a chiropractor.

The couple also struggles with communication despite nearly-three-decades marriage:

Half of us don’t know how to communicate, and it’s only getting worse with texting and all of that. Communication is a huge thing, and we still struggle with it. Sheryl and I still have somebody we would see if we ever felt like we need it.
