"I Was Dying From Loneliness": Kathie Lee Gifford Couldn't Stay In Her Family Home After Her Husband's Death

Date November 22, 2019 14:07

After leaving Today, Kathie Lee Gifford moved to the Nashville area — to Franklin, Tennesee, about 20 miles south of the city where she had lived previously, Greenwich, Connecticut.

Gifford told PEOPLE that the reason for changing cities was to get more inspiration and joy in her life.

Even if you're just having a dinner party there, invariably, people end up at your piano or taking your guitar off the wall, and next thing you know, you've written a song, and you're in the studio the next week doing a demo.

Nonetheless, the real reason is not about having dinner parties, playing musical instruments, and writing a song. In reality, the former Today host left Connecticut because she was "dying of loneliness" after her husband's death. Kathie Lee Gifford watched her husband, Frank Gifford, dying in 2015 in the same house their adult children moved out of a few years before.

That huge beautiful memory-filled home was like a morgue to me.

In a 90-minute interview in her opulent brownstone near the Franklin town square, the 65-year-old candidly confessed she had moved out because of her late partner.

Here's the bad news — I'm a widow, an orphan, and an empty nester. The good news is, I have the freedom of a widow, an orphan and an empty nester. I've got all the time to spend my days writing. I'm having the life I could've only ever dreamed of.

Kathie Lee Gifford's life

Life has been hellish for the former NBC's Today host — she lost her mother, Joan Epstein and her husband, Frank Gifford. Loneliness was eating her from the inside during years, but in a motivational and emotional video, Kathie said she had relied on her faith to cope with the losses and put things in perspective.

My biggest struggle at this point of my life is loneliness. I've lost my parents, my husband is gone now and my children live far away from me.

However, she tries to focus on positive things in her life and find blessings as much as she can.

I've discovered that if I just keep thinking about what I've lost, I don't pay any attention to what I still have. I don't want to live my life in hopelessness. I've been there.

Losing the closest people to one's heart is heartbreaking, shattering, and horrifying. We hope Kathie Lee Gifford will continue to be strong after losing her husband and a mother.
