"Fingers Crossed:" Kathy Bates Is Hoping For A Cure For Lymphedema Within 5 Years

Kathy Bates' struggle with lymphedema is one she hasn't shied away from. The actress thought the worst was over when she survived cancer twice. Even though she was cautious in her optimism, she never expected the next health battle she had to cope with.

Speaking to People, Kathy opened up about her struggle with lymphedema, a condition that usually occurs when the lymph nodes are removed during cancer treatment. This incurable disease meant that the Oscar winner had to struggle through extreme pain and swelling.

Kathy felt so bad about it that she thought that her career and even her life was over.

I really felt that life was over for me. I probably wouldn’t work again, and I was angry for a long time.

While speaking on Dr. Phil in January 2019, Kathy opened up about this condition. She revealed that going through lymphedema was a "bad time" for her, but these days, she's choosing to remain optimistic about her health.

"Fingers crossed" for a cure

Kathy Bates is currently cancer-free and her battle with lymphedema is hopefully behind her now. But what has been on her mind lately is to help others who are going through a similar situation.

The 71-year-old told CloserWeekly recently that she has been doing all she can to find a cure for lymphedema.

It’s been great to help people in the real world, and we’re hoping to find a cure. Keep hoping we’ll find a cure within the next five years, so fingers crossed.

Kathy pointed out that millions of people suffer from this condition and not all of them get the help they need on time. This has inspired her to raise awareness as much as possible in hopes that things will change.

Fighting the good fight

Even though having lymphedema was very tough on Kathy, she admitted in an interview that she saw the bright side which was that it pushed her to realize she could use her celebrity status to help people.

Sometimes, knowing you're not alone in your pain is one of the things that can keep you going. So it makes sense that Kathy wants to do this for others. She once revealed to People that all she wants is for people to be able to come out and talk about it.

Not many remain cheerful, positive and hopeful after going through what Kathy went through. This brave actress deserves props for fighting for her life and even after things got better, choosing to keep fighting for others too. What an incredible woman!
