Let's look deep into the situation and figure out where does Michael Strahan stand today in his relationship with his former co-host.

Kelly Ripa has long history with her co-hosts

As you might remember, it all started with Live! with Regis and Kelly, which later turned into Live with Kelly and Michael and now we have Live with Kelly and Ryan. Here's the timeline, to remove all confusion:

  • Live! with Regis and Kelly aired from 2001 till 2011, when Regis Philbin retired;
  • Live with Kelly and Michael aired from 2012 till 2016. Michael Strahan left for Good Morning America.
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan 2017-present.

It hasn't always been fun and games for the famous host. Although she'd worked with Regis Philbin the longest, he had no interest in being too 'buddy-buddy' off screen. Kelly shared:

Regis had a mandate: Absolutely no talking off-camera. He had almost a superstition about it. You save it for the show. I'd be like, ‘Good morning,' and he'd say, ‘Save it for the air!'

Then Michael Strahan came along. The two hit it off from the start and seemed like a very nice match. However, the truth started coming out by the end of Strahan's time on the show.

What happened between Michael and Kelly?

In April 2016, Michael announced he would be leaving the show in September and will transfer to Good Morning America. Kelly Ripa didn't take the news well and even skipped a few shows for to process the information. Kelly then returned to the show and even congratulated Michael on his new job.

A few days after Ripa's return, Strahan makes new announcement and says he'll be leaving that May, months earlier than what he first planned. It wasn't clear what prompted that decision, but relationship between the co-hosts appeared cold.

Upon his departure, Michael admitted that he and Kelly weren't on the best terms and he was quite upset over how things ended:

The most disappointing thing to me was that I was painted as the bad guy, because I value the way I carry myself. I don't want people to see me as ‘Oh, he just ran out, just left them there.’ That's just not true.

How does Michael Strahan feel today?

It's been a few years since Michael Strahan left Live, and he addressed the situation one more time, after having gained some perspective.

During an interview with The New York Times, Michael talked about working on TV and how his expectations weren't always met. He said:

I’ve had jobs where I got there and felt like: Wow, I didn’t know I was supposed to be a sidekick. I thought I was coming here to be a partner.

When asked whether he was referring to Kelly Ripa, he avoided the question, only saying "It was an experience!"

Michael then openly talked about his former co-host and finally assured everyone that he holds no grudge towards her:

If people think, Oh, he hates her — I don’t hate her. I do respect her for what she can do at her job. I cannot say enough about how good she is at her job.

Kelly Ripa seems happy with Ryan Seacrest

It seems that the situation between Kelly and Michael is water under the bridge now. They're both busy with things they love, and Kelly seems to be getting along with Ryan Seacrest splendidly.

Ripa praises Ryan saying he's "the future of the franchise" and "the future of ABC." They also seem very close and supportive of each other. We love their chemistry!

In addition, Kelly and Ryan's relationship inspired an upcoming sitcom Work Wife on ABC. The premise is described as a male and female co-workers whose “professional success, personal friendship and ability to share deodorant makes their lives work.” Sounds like the Live team to us!

We're very happy to see Kelly Ripa in her element and definitely think Ryan Seacrest was the perfect choice for her co-host. Who's your favorite Live hosting duo?
