Fame is a fickle mistress. Not many people can handle it and, as a result, Hollywood is riddled with actors struggling with their sobriety.

Luckily, many of them find the hope they need, and do their best to help out each other, like Bradley Cooper did with Brad Pitt.

Actors who struggled with alcoholism in the past

We want to focus on the positive here, so we want to quickly pay attention to some famous actors that were able to conquer their addiction and came out better men on the other side. Some of them include:

  • Rob Lowe. Has been sober for almost 30 years now *cue applause*. Says his wife, Sheryl, inspired him to stay clean.
  • Robert Downey Jr. Notoriously almost flushed his career down the toilet due to his addiction. Managed to get sober in the late 2000s and is once again one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.
  • Tom Hardy. Was addicted to alcohol and drugs in the past, but managed to eventually turn his life around and stays sober owing to the support of his wife.
  • Ben Affleck. Struggled with drinking prior and post his divorce with Jennifer Garner. Currently stays sober and attends church with his family every Sunday when his schedule allows for it.

And, as we mentioned already, Bradley Cooper. We're talking about him specifically because he managed to not only help himself, but also his friend.

Cooper told GQ that he came to an important realization back in 2006. He said he suddenly saw what his life would be if hadn't given up drinking:

If I continued it, I was really going to sabotage my whole life.

Bradley got sober, dedicated himself to work, and is now one of the most successful people in Hollywood.

But now back to him and Brad Pitt, cause that's why you're all here after all.

Brad Pitt pays tribute to Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper presented his dear friend Brad Pitt with the Best Supporting Actor award at the National Board of Review Gala on January 8.

Brad happily stepped up and gave his pal a big hug, he then started his speech by celebrating Cooper himself:

He's a sweetheart. I got sober because of this guy and every day has been happier ever since.

First of all, we had no idea they were this close. And second of all, it's incredible what Bradley did and more people should have a friend like him.

When did Pitt's alcohol problems began?

That's a tough question. In an interview with The New York Times Pitt implied that he'd always had tendencies towards alcoholism, but kept it in check during his marriage to Angelina.

However, once the couple separated, it all went sideways for Brad and he stopped controlling himself:

I had taken things as far as I could take it.

But, at one point, he realized he needed to stop. That's when he started attending AA and, as we know now, Bradley Cooper played a big role in Pitt's road to sobriety.

The story and friendship of these men is truly inspiring. We're happy they're not hiding their demons and allow others to see on their example that it's possible to get better.
