Dean Sullivan, the 64-year-old actor who played Jimmy Corkhill in Channel 4 soap 'Brookside' has opened up about his battle with prostate cancer and how he knew "something wasn't right".

Dean Sullivan intimated that everything started when he noticed some problems with his "stream".

"I’d noticed when I was going to the loo that my stream wasn’t as strong as it used to be.

The man admitted he "never imagined it was something to do with my prostate", as he didn’t have any of the other symptoms, "such as going to the toilet several times in the night."

Actor Dean Sullivan and his prostate cancer

When Dean visited his local surgery the doctor told him he didn’t think there was anything to investigate.

Luckily, Sullivan was serious about his health and when nothing had improved two months later, he decided to return to the hospital again. Yet, this time the news wasn't good. His prostate-specific antigen level was raised.

Dean Sullivan had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2018. He opted for HDR (high dose rate) brachytherapy to treat the disease.

We can only imagine how hard it was to face the diagnosis and battle it! He, however, decided not to give up and managed to win this war. Actually, it was Dean’s persistence that may have saved his life!

He was lucky to find out that the cancer cells "hadn’t gone anywhere else" and he was cancer-free!

Reflecting on getting the good news last month, he told the Daily Mirror newspaper:

"It was such a relief, so wonderful to hear. I thanked the Lord for looking after me and for all the people who had said prayers for me..."

Although there are some side effects of treatment, his life is definitely more important than this.

" There are side effects including hot flushes and night sweats, which my female friends refer to as the 'male menopause'. I've also lost body hair, which feels a bit emasculating, but it's a small price to pay for being cancer-free."

People's support

People were quick to support Dean:

"Great way to be positive I hope you make a great recovery wishing you well"

"Hoping for your continued recovery and wishing you all the best"

" Hope for a full recovery👍 "

Today, Dean Sullivan urges people to trust their instincts and feelings, listen to their body and when something doesn't seem right health-wise.

"Sometimes people think they're bothering the doctor unnecessarily and that doctors are always right, so if they've said it's nothing, it's nothing."But doctors aren't always right so we shouldn't be embarrassed to go back"

Body listens to mind and mind listens to body. Awareness is the link. Make no mistake: Every cell knows when you are unhappy, anxious or stressed. A cell's awareness is expressed in chemical reactions instead of words. No matter. The message comes through loud and clear. All we need is to be attentive and caring with our own feelings. Never neglect signs that your body sends you and be healthy!
