If you think Hollywood is a place love goes to die, you'll change your mind when you learn of this actor's sweet love story with his beautiful wife.

Ray Romano and his wife, Anna Scarpulla, met long before became a star. So, their love for each other wasn't initially tied to the fancy Hollywood lifestyle and red carpet glamor. They were two regular people who have now gone on to create a lasting marriage.

Ray and Anna's connection

If you're a fan of the Everybody Loves Raymond star, you may be curious to know more about his personal life and his love story began. The good news is that Ray is only too happy to share.

While speaking to Graham Bessinger in 2016, Ray confessed that he fell for his wife while they both worked at a bank. He was 25 at the time and still lived with his parents so he didn't feel very confident that Anna would say yes.

Ray added that he decided to take the risk and ask her out when he left the bank because he felt it would be less pressure on him if she said no. Thankfully, Anna took a chance on Ray which then culminated in them getting married in October 1987.

So what's the secret to their lasting marriage? Apparently, Anna not being so overly into his fame is one of the things that keep them together, at least according to what Ray told Ellen Degeneres in 2013.

I think it works because if you are someone with fame, it's good to be married to someone who is not impressed with that at all.

A happy family unit

According to his bio, Ray Romano is a happy father of four. His children, Alexandra, twins Gregory and Matthew, and son Joseph are an important part of his life.

In fact, not only do they bring a lot of joy to the actor, the kids actually inspired several storylines that audiences fell in love with on Everybody Loves Raymond, a show which ran from 1996 to 2005.

The 62-year-old actor's kids are all-grown-up as they are now in their 20s and pursuing their respective paths.

The children's impact on Everybody Loves Raymond

Not only did Ray Romano's children inspire some storylines on the hit sitcom, but they were also inspirations for the names of some of the characters.

Ray Romano's character's daughter was named after the actor's real-life daughter, Alexandra. The characters Ray and Debra's twin boys were named Gregory and Matthew, after Ray Romano's real-life sons in the show's pilot episode.

However, according to the Chicago Tribune, the actor decided against that as he felt it would have been too uncomfortable for all the TV kids to bear the same names as his real children. The boys' names were eventually changed to Geoffrey and Michael.

Surviving cancer

Like many marriages, Ray and Anna's union isn't always smooth sailing. They have had their ups and downs including battling cancer together.

During a joint interview with People in 2012, the couple opened up about this aspect of their life. They shared how Anna was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer two years prior. This led to her having to undergo a grueling process of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation.

Anna revealed that she was terrified when she was first given the news, but she knew she could rely on her family and friends.

On how the experience affected them as a couple, Ray said:

But you appreciate everything so much more. It’s a cliche that life is short, but it is. We’re lucky.
