Michelle Obama Defends Her Friendship With George W. Bush Even Though They "Disagree On Policy"

Michelle Obama and George W. Bush's friendship has been the source of a few viral moments. The ways they publicly show their respect and affection for each other have been widely documented.

Michelle and George W. have been captured having private conversations, laughing together and even sharing a hug at public events over the years. But two of their recent interactions really had people amazed at their friendship.

The first one was In September 2018 during the memorial service organized for the late Senator John McCain. George W. was caught on camera taking a piece of cough drop from his wife Laura Bush, then handing it over to Michelle Obama who was seated on his other side.

Three months later, during George H.W Bush's funeral service, they recreated that moment as George W. handed a piece of candy to Michelle before taking a seat at the event.

During an interview with Today show host Jenna Bush Hager, the former FLOTUS opened up about the foundation of her friendship with the ex-president even though they have different beliefs in certain areas.

According to Today, Michelle told George W Bush's daughter, Jenna, she does have a lot in common with her father.

Our values are the same. We disagree on policy, but we don't disagree on humanity. We don't disagree about love and compassion. I think that's true for all of us. It's just that we get lost in our fear of what's different.

Michelle was also asked for her opinion about the backlash that followed after Ellen DeGeneres was pictured hanging out with George W. at a Dallas Cowboys game. The former First Lady replied:

When we drop our guards, we let ourselves become vulnerable, and that vulnerability allows us to share our true stories with each other.

Michelle Obama once gave another insight into hers and George's friendship when she spoke on the Today show in 2018.

The Becoming author explained that due to protocol, she and the former POTUS are "forever seatmates" and over time, they have managed to share a close bond.

So he is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the formers gather. I love him to death. He's a wonderful man. He's a funny man.

When you take a close look at Michelle and George W's political beliefs and you can easily see that they may differ in their respective opinions. But somehow, their friendship transcends all that, proving that disagreeing with somebody doesn't automatically mean you cannot be friends with them.
