Sam Smith Gets Real About Weight Struggles And Undergoing Liposuction When He Was 12 Years Old: "I Was So Self-Conscious"

Date December 10, 2019

Sam Smith's weight loss transformation came as a source of surprise and even inspiration to a lot of people. The singer now looks much different from how he used to when he first stepped into the scene. This sparked a curiosity about how he managed to drop the extra pounds.

While speaking on 60 Minutes Australia a couple of years ago, Sam gave an insight into his struggle with food and weight. He revealed that when he faced tough times in school as a young boy, he depended on food for comfort because that was the only thing that made him "feel better."

He revealed that food had "controlled" him from his childhood but he eventually decided to change that and now, he has a body to be proud of.

By 2015, Sam had already lost up to 50 pounds. Speaking to Extra, he revealed that he still felt self-conscious despite his weight loss and it was something to do with how badly he was teased as a child for being overweight.

Sam Smith's liposuction at a young age

In March 2019, the Stay With Me singer delved even deeper into his childhood struggles with eating and weight gain while speaking to I Weigh's Jameela Jamil.

The singer revealed that when he was 12 years old, he underwent liposuction mostly due to his unhappiness with his appearance. He revealed that he was a "chubby" child which made him very uncomfortable and he was also bullied as a result.

When it became too much to bear, an 11-year-old Sam visited the doctor to discuss options. And at age 12, he had the surgery.

I was so self-conscious that it was affecting my mood every day. I had liposuction, I was 12 years old.

He said the effect of the surgery was temporary as it didn't change much. He gained back the weight in a matter of weeks because, at the time, he still hadn't developed the right eating habits.

Sam revealed that, for a very long time, his appearance caused him a lot of emotional turmoil.

It’s the basis of all my sadness. Literally everything I’ve ever been sad about is my weight. I struggle with it every day. I get very, very dark and very sad.

Learning to love his body

Sam Smith sure had some challenges as a child. But these days, he's learning to love and embrace his body.

In an interview with VMagazine, the singer opened up about accepting himself, flaws and all. He admitted that even though it's still a work in progress, he feels he's getting better with each day.

Now, I’ve gotten to a place where I really love my stretch marks and I just enjoy my body.

Teaching kids about body positivity

No child should have to go through moments when they are depressed and sad about their looks. Parents and other adults can do a lot to improve a child's self-confidence and teach them to embrace their bodies.
