Date December 3, 2019

For many people, having Mandy Patinkin on Criminal Minds was one of the main reasons they started watching the show. The award-winning actor has had a career that spanned decades and fans were excited when he earned the lead role in the procedural TV show in 2005.

Criminal Minds was a police procedural TV series about F.B.I criminal profilers and Mandy's appearance seemed to be the perfect fit but out of nowhere, he disappeared after its second season.

According to the NYTimes, the executive producer of the show at the time described Mandy as "that father who goes out for a carton of milk and then just never comes home,” implying that one minute, he was there and the next, he was gone. It was later revealed that Mandy did write personal apology notes to his castmates where he wished them good luck.

Mandy Patinkin on leaving Criminal Minds

When the actor didn't come on board for season three of the TV show, viewers were curious about why Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds. It took a while but he has since opened up about his decision to step away.

In an interview with NYMag, the actor revealed that he just wasn't comfortable with the subject matters that were explored on the show and he also admitted that he regretted being a part of it in the first place.

The biggest public mistake I ever made was that I chose to do Criminal Minds in the first place.

Many went on to add that his experience on the show was far different from what he expected it to be like.

I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality.

About four years after Mandy Patinkin's final episode on Criminal Minds, he snagged a role on the TV series Homeland.

Before Criminal Minds, Mandy Patinkin's other TV Shows appearances include Chicago Hope, Law & Order, Boston Public and many more.

Another sudden departure

It wasn't just Mandy Patinkin that surprised fans with his unexpected exit from Criminal Minds. Another lead character Thomas Gibson was also forced to leave abruptly after he was fired by the shows' producers due to his behavior on set.

There's no doubt that this TV show has undergone a lot of changes since it premiered in 2005. Mandy Patinkin was only one of the cast members to step away and based on his reasons, it makes sense that this was the best choice to make to protect his mental health and comfort.
