People Support Michael Stipe Who Made Donald Trump Shut Up And Leave The Pub's Show In The 1990s

Date February 7, 2020

Do you know that Michael Stipe and Donald Trump are on bad terms as POTUS used R.E.M.’s songs at his rallies? The Georgia-based rock band tried to do some measures:

  • They considered legal actions against the U.S. President to prevent the use of their music;
  • They also warned people not to think the group had something to do with Donald’s statements or debates.

Michael Stipe used R.E.M. bassist Mike Mill’s Twitter feed to express outrage, fury, and dissatisfaction by using cursing words. The boyband doesn’t have any intention to forgive the U.S. President and will not stop addressing the issue on social media.

Michael Stipe and Patti Smith

The R.E.M. members have been so mad about Donald Trump for years. The band's frontman, Michael Stipe, once made him leave the show in the late 90s at Joe’s pub by telling him to ‘shut up’ during Patti Smith’s performance.

Here's what he said about the situation on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert:

People were turning around; it was very disruptive and rude ... Patti Smith went on stage, she was nervous and started her first song, and he kept talking. And I was like, ‘Excuse me, that’s my friend, and you have to stop talking. What are you doing? Shut up.’ The guy got up and left. He walked out. And do you know who that guy was? Donald J. Trump.

Despite such a situation, Michael Stipe actually made himself as a kind individual. People decided to recall their meetings with the R.E.M.’s frontman.

@MrSnuggleDuck04:

I had the privilege to meet this man in 2006 when I was walking past RadioCity, and he was talking with the bassist of his former band, I believe. I very nervously said hello, and he warmly invited me into the conversation, and he was one of the most genuine and kindest people I have ever met!

@Kevin Sullivan:

I had the good fortune of meeting him and getting to spend most of a day with him. One of the classiest, coolest humans on the planet.

@NEXUS MINDWARPED AMERICA.:

I’m 50, and this guy’s always been a hero of mine.. ..and this just reminded me why.

@The Sprawl:

It amuses me to imagine how much someone like Michael Stipe annoys Trump supporters. Every aspect of his personality seems to be constructed out of things that scare/irritate Trumpites.

@neurofire:

There’s something about Michael Stipe that is so comforting - it might be that there’s ‘no bullshit’ nor ‘airs nor graces’ about him, or that he enters a room without flagging his celebrity or stature. How do I know this? I used to see him at Sundance in Park City - happy to sit at a sidewalk table, quietly sipping a coffee, engaged in conversation with novice filmmakers. That kind of interaction helps you through tough times.

@Diego Fonseca:

I love Michael Stipe’s vibe, so human, so sincere, so humble. A little introvert yet an amazing performer. The best thing was his advice from Michelle: When we go low, we blame Billy Bush!!!...sorry, that was the Melania’s version of the Michelle’s advice: When they go low, we go high!!! And that’s the right way!

Michael Stipe’s interview

Michael Stipe always talks in small flurries that are hard to be put into sentences. He admitted in an interview with The Guardian that it was hard for him to express himself.

I find myself often at a loss for words. There are T.V. shows I don’t go on because I do not talk like that, I don’t think like that, I don’t debate like that.

The R.E.M.’s frontman may not be on “the [autistic] spectrum,” but he is very good at geography and a sense of place. He noted:

Give me the city first.’ I am not on the [autistic] spectrum, but the way my brain organizes things is different from regular people: give me the place, and my recall improves by 200%.

What Donald Trump did at his rallies wasn’t a good deed whatsoever. At least, he should have stopped using the Georgia-based rock band’s songs when they respectful and kindly asked not to do it for the first time. It seems like the President has been his own self throughout the decades. What is your opinion about the situation?
