"I Thought I Would Be Alone:" Valerie Bartinelli Had Given Up On Love When She Met Second Husband Who Helped Her Make Peace With Her Ex

Date November 6, 2019

Valerie Bertinelli's husband is Tom Vitale. But before that, she was married to Eddie Van Halen. However, their marriage was not to last. Valerie was 21 years old when she walked down the aisle with Eddie, then 25, on April 11, 1981.

Eddie's band manager Noel E. Monk, in his book Runnin' with the Devil, wrote that the wedding wasn't completely perfect as they had some setbacks including the groom getting sick in the restroom.

Valerie and Eddie eventually separated in 2001, after being married for 20 years. The divorce was finalized six years later.

Valerie Bertinelli on finding love again

When Valerie met Eddie, she thought she had found the love of her life.

Speaking to People, Valerie said that she hated it when people doubted their love and she strongly believed their marriage would last forever. However, she gave up on the marriage when the musician refused to deal with his addiction issues despite being diagnosed with oral cancer in 2000.

After the divorce, Valerie assumed she would not find love again. She said:

After Ed and I separated, I thought, I’ll finish raising my son, and I’ll go away, have about 40 cats, and just get nice and fat. I thought I would be alone for the rest of my life.

However, love came for her again when she tied the knot with second husband Tom Vitale in 2011. Valerie appreciated Tom for loving her "no matter what," telling AARP:

I’ve never felt more beautiful at any weight than when Tom looks at me.

Not only did this second marriage make her happy, but it also helped her come to terms with her past with Eddie. A friend told Closer Weekly:

[Valerie and Eddie] have both forgiven each other and love their son. There are no more bad feelings between them.

Taking her time

Valerie learned her lesson about rushing into marriage through her experience with Eddie Van Halen. She tied the knot with the rockstar only 8 months after they met. But when it came to Tom, she took her time as they reportedly dated for six years before taking the plunge.

Sometimes, love happens smoothly and easily. But other times, a person might go through several ups and downs, even marrying the wrong partner, before they finally find who they truly belong with. But no matter how long it takes to find true love, it's always worth it in the end.
