It’s hard to imagine Dirty Dancing without its stars - Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. The pair managed to create a number of iconic scenes that still give us goosebumps and make us want to dance.

But the unforgettable pair wasn’t actually the first choice for the movie. Val Kilmer was offered to play Johnny and Sarah Jessica Parker and Sharon Stone auditioned for the role of Baby.

Yet, Swayze and Grey were destined to play the iconic characters. But not many people know that in real life, the star pair weren’t getting along.

Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey’s relationship

Patrick Swayze wrote in his memoir that it was very difficult to work with Grey. He noted that she was unprofessional at times, making everyone do scenes ‘over and over again.’

Patrick Swayze on Jennifer Grey:

We did have a few moments of friction when we were tired or after a long day of shooting. She seemed particularly emotional, sometimes bursting into tears if someone criticized her. Other times, she slipped into silly moods, forcing us to do scenes over and over again when she'd start laughing.

We can actually spot a moment when Grey was not able to control her emotions. In the iconic dance rehearsal routine, we see her character bursting out with laughter – that scene was not scripted, nor was Swayze's notable frustration.

He also wrote about the exhausting lake scene, where his character tries to lift Baby out of the water:

It was horrifyingly, hypothermically cold in that lake, and we filmed that scene over and over.

However, despite the personal issues, the two reconciled later and build a strong friendship. After Swayze’s death, Grey had only nice things to say about him, noting that he was ‘a great dancer’ and had a ‘fearless’ personality. We still miss him!
