It has been reported that Edward passed away on Tuesday, December 24th. It was supposed to be his 34th birthday.

ESPN confirmed his death in a statement obtained by the DailyMail. They expressed how sorry they were to share such "devastating" news.

On December 2, he posted pictures of himself covering the Michigan-Ohio state game which took place a few days prior. In the caption, he revealed that he was "getting pneumonia" and at the time, he didn't think it was a big problem.

Covering #TheGame was a lot of fun. Getting pneumonia ... not so much. But, hey, I’m a hockey player.

It was believed that complications from the illness led to his death.

The last post he made on Instagram was a picture of his fiancee Katy Berteau. The two were planning to get married in April.

In the caption, Edward wrote that dealing with pneumonia was "pretty terrible" and "the absolute worst." He, however, appreciated Katy for taking care of him even though there was a risk she could contract the disease herself.

The news of his death came as a shock to his fans.
